Herbert Howells and Jerusalem

According to Fred Teardo at the Cathedral Church of the Advent , Herbert Howells (1892-1983) “was snowed-in while spending the new year in Cheltenham. Written during World War II, these anthems were originally titled In Time of War, echoing Haydn’s Missa in tempore belli. Noteworthy is that the composer had lost his home during the London Blitz in 1940. This portion of Psalm 122 invites our prayers for peace in the Middle East.”
